5th Grade Math
In 5th Grade Math we follow an accelerated Common Core Curriculum. We will cover topics in whole number computation and application; volume; fraction computation and application; decimal computation and application; 2-dimensional geometry; and the coordinate plane. We will learn to use the 8 mathematical practices in such a way that we develop great critical thinking skills in a collaborative environment. Our classroom will be a guided and flipped classroom with differentiated activities. We will not be using an assigned textbook - rather a multitude of resources such as ISBE Model Math Curriculum, Engage NY, Illustrative Mathematics, Achieve the Core, and Inside Mathematics (to name a few) in addition to some traditional work from Pearson’s Course 1 text. Engaging tasks will be completed during class and for at home practice.
The 7th grade Math curriculum is one that is aligned to the Common Core State Standards yet is enriched with opportunities that allow for the completion of the first half of an Algebra 1 course. It focuses on developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations; solving equations; understanding and analyzing functions including linear and absolute value functions; and solving equations and systems of equations;. Geometric reasoning is developed with the study of scale drawings, perimeter, area, surface area, and volume. Finally, students practice drawing inferences from theoretical and experimental data collections.
Our 8th grade Math curriculum is aligned to the Common Core State Standards allowing for the completion of the second half of an Algebra 1 course. It focuses on further developing understanding of expressions and equations; understanding linear, quadratic, exponential, radical, and rational functions. Geometric reasoning is developed with the study of right triangles bringing a more complete understanding of the Pythagorean theorem and trig ratios. Finally, students continue practicing drawing inferences from data collections.
