News From Our Classroom
In 8th grade science, we follow the OCS and Next Generation Science Standards. We will begin the year reviewing the scientific method in preparation for the 8th grade STREEM project. The STREAM project is where the 8th graders will work in small groups across homerooms to investigate a topic of sustainability that connects to Pope Francis’ encyclical message about the environment. These topics may include: composting, recycling, waste management, water conservation, energy use, or gardening. The 8th graders will use their scientific method skills to research a topic, develop a plan, collect data, and communicate their results to the community. In addition, we will focus on units in chemical interactions; genetics and biological evolution; and simple machines!
In 7th grade science, we follow the OCS and Next Generation Science Standards. We will dive into studying the scientific method in preparation for the science fair this year! The science fair will be completed in five phases with weekly checkpoints. The goal of this format is to break the project up into small, attainable portions while allowing for teacher support and student questions. In addition, we will focus on units in cells and genetics; energy, and waves!
In 6th grade math, we follow an accelerated common core curriculum. We will cover topics in algebraic expressions and properties; ratios, rates, and proportions; equations and inequalities; integers and rational numbers; statistical measures and data display; and surface area and volume. This course focuses on mastering many skills to allow for the completion of the first part of Algebra 1 in 7th grade.
