The 7th grade curriculum is a rigorous program designed to challenge the student not only academically, but also in the development of self-advocacy skills. A strong sense of accountability, responsibility and citizenship is fostered in the 7th grade classrooms.
Our 7th grade Math curriculum is one that is aligned to the Common Core State Standards yet is enriched with opportunities that allow for the completion of the first half of an Algebra 1 course. It focuses on developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations; solving equations; understanding and analyzing functions including linear and absolute value functions. Geometric reasoning is developed with the study of scale drawings, perimeter, area, surface area, and volume. Finally, students practice drawing inferences from theoretical and experimental data collections.
The goal of our 7th grade science program is to gain a solid, well-balanced foundation of science concepts in the three major areas of Life Science, Physical Science and Earth Science. Our students learn to think like a scientist – logically, creatively, safely and out of the box. This is accomplished through discussion, labs, projects and a variety of STEM activities. The 7th grade curriculum covers Motion, Forces and Energy Chemical Building Block, From Bacteria to Plants, and a Scribbler robotics program in which the students develop programming skills.
In 7th grade language arts, students receive a rigorous course of grammar study with the goal of using these skills in the creation of fluid and varied sentence constructions. Students engage in a variety of writing activities while studying the structures of well-crafted paragraphs and essays in a variety of subject matters.
7th grade Reading students will engage in close reading activities, studying various pieces of literature with a focus on decoding meanings to discover how an author constructs a novel. Students will study various literary devices and how they relate together to create the work as a whole, and active reading and annotation processes are developed through guided study.
In keeping with the Common Core State Standards, the 7th grade Social Studies curriculum exposes students to a wealth of primary sources and develops critical thinking skills, while requiring students to analyze a variety of perspectives and investigate key historical topics. Our 7th graders’ study of U.S. History includes the causes and consequences of the American Revolution, the Articles of Confederation, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution (Federal and State), Slavery in America, and the Civil War.
The New Testament is studied in 7th grade Religion. The students read, discuss and reflect in order to learn and live the Gospel message.
