St. Anne Parish School 5th grade prepares our students for a successful transition to middle school. Our emphasis is to guide our students toward independence, responsibility, accountability, and servant leadership. Highlights in 5th grade include working with our 3rd grade and Kindergarten buddies, participating in class service projects, becoming pen-pals with our sharing parish, St. Francis of Rome, in Cicero, going on field trips to live theatre productions and to Space Camp, and celebrating our successes with a end-of-the-year class picnic!
5th Grade Math
In fifth grade, we follow a common core plus curriculum. The topics we cover are the following: whole number computation and application, volume, fraction computation and applications, decimal computation and applications, two-dimensional geometry, and coordinate geometry. We include supplemental material that might be covered in later grades to help challenge students and ensure differentiation. We use an Activboard, manipulatives, and online tools to offer students different ways to demonstrate knowledge of material.
5th Grade Science
5th grade science is a hands-on, STEM-based curriculum, focusing on earth sciences (weather and landforms) and astronomy (the solar system). Our culminating field trip is to Space Camp at the Challenger Learning Center in Woodstock, where we participate in a simulated mission to locate a comet. Our students create elaborate composition notebooks with detailed graphic organizers, illustrations/diagrams, and reflective, scientific writing.
5th Grade Reading
5th grade students learn how to become independent readers who think critically about text. Using a workshop model to individualize instruction and support all readers, we study a variety of genres together. We begin in August with a unit on building strong reading habits and enthusiasm for all types of books. As we progress through the year, we build our enthusiasm and skill for reading by learning how to study details closely, analyze characters, interpret text, and write about our reading in a variety of ways. Genre studies in 5th grade include realistic fiction, historical fiction, expository nonfiction, and poetry.
5th Grade Language Arts
5th grade students study a variety of writing techniques throughout the year, including narrative, informational, explanatory, persuasive, and letter-writing. We polish our grammar skills through guided practice and incorporating grammar lessons into our writing.
